Page Bradham’s 1961 tour map of Europe has enabled us to recreate computerized maps of our various IES trips using the latest technology. This one shows our bus trip from London to Vienna (with side trips to Oxford and Chartres), a distance of 1,400 miles, after our sea voyage across the Atlantic.

What we’ve learned from comparing the 1961 map with a modern one is how much the primary road systems have changed. In 1961 the major highways were almost all two-lane roads that followed ancient routes while today everything goes by superhighways cutting across the terrain. Here’s our 1961 route, which went on roads that today are mere byways:
